New Oak House, Little Wymondley

The project consisted of a replacement dwelling for individual clients on the site of a collapsed barn, combining the following essential ecological characteristics.

  • Timber frame using softwoods from managed sources, timber board materials and English green oak structural framing from storm-damaged stocks.
  • 'Warmcel' insulation
  • 'Breathing Wall' technology
  • All stable organically-based preservatives and timber treatments
  • No CFC’s used
  • Plastic products used to the absolute minimum
  • Fenestration designed to account for sun-paths and passive solar gains available, with the majority of glazing to the south-facing elevation
  • Natural oak cladding throughout, requiring no treatment whatsoever
  • Provision for solar heating supplementation and rainwater recycling
